"The Federal Tax Service informs about new terms of tax refund calculation, in accordance with the Financial Services Act of 2013, and P30 form filling changes."
Two emails with the above text arrived in our Inbox today, and set alarm bells ringing. Both carried attachments of around 438kb, and neither came (as they claimed) from the UK tax office. (One clue to this was the use of the word Federal - as that relates to the American tax service not the UK one!)
One traced back to a computer user in the USA and the other to a user in India, so possibly both drone machines sending out emails without their owners' knowledge.
A search online brought a link from CISCO security centre advising us that the attachments carried, as we suspected, a malicious payload in the guise of an executable file:
http://tools.cisco.com/security/center/viewThreatOutbreakAlert.x?alertId=30863This is a fairly new threat so please be aware of it and do not open the attachment to any such email you mail receive, and do make sure your anti-virus software is installed and updated with the latest threat definitions, to help keep you safe.
