Today I had a problem with my HUDL tablet which is on Android 5.1 and can't be updated beyond that. The issue was constant popup messages saying that each app couldn't work until I had updated Google Play Services. But Google Play Services wouldn't update, it got so far, the screen kept freezing, and I had to restart the tablet time after time, and I was tearing my hair out. Figuring others had probably experienced the same or a similar issue I went searching and found this page
https://www.guidingtech.com/google-play-services-wont-update-issue/ which helped enormously.
Although I'd already done or checked fixes 1 to 5, it was fix 6 that helped me sort out my tablet. I hadn't been able to disable Google Play Services as the option was greyed out, but by following the walk-through for disabling Find My Device I was then able to disable then re-enable Google Play Services, which then allowed the required update to work properly. The update paused for several minutes at 88% and I worried it would fail again, but it picked up and finished and all has worked properly since. Phew!
